Alert: If Porto isn’t on your travel list, you’re doing it wrong. This gem of a city in northern Portugal serves charm on a platter, complete with stunning views, blue-tiled churches, and a carb-loaded menu that’ll have you questioning your life choices (in the best way). Here’s the tea from my March 2023 trip—and spoiler, it’s full of pretty Airbnbs, iconic sandwiches, and enough stairs to make your Fitbit cry.
Our Stay: Airbnb With a View (and Stairs)
When I travel with my client and friend Araceli, we make it a mission to book Airbnbs with views—balconies included—because, hello, photo ops. Porto did not disappoint. We stayed across the famous Dom Luís I Bridge, which meant stunning views but also an absurd amount of stairs. Pro tip: pack light because lugging a suitcase up those steps is its own workout.
Was it worth it? Absolutely. But, honestly, you can snag similar views from other spots in the city without giving your quads a meltdown. Choose wisely.
The Food Scene: Franchesina, Pastel de Nata, and No Regrets
Let’s talk food. Everyone on YouTube screamed about trying the Francesinha, so we caved. Araceli got the classic, I got the vegetarian version. Verdict? Delicious but so heavy. It’s the kind of meal you’d inhale post-clubbing, not in a cute little restaurant mid-day.
Now, the pastel de nata? That’s a different story. I devoured multiple during our stay, and honestly, I’d go back to Porto just for those custard-filled bites of heaven. 10/10 recommend.
Blue Tiles and Picture-Perfect Moments
Porto’s obsession with blue tiles (aka azulejos) is unmatched. We snapped pics in front of the Igreja do Carmo, one of the most famous blue-tiled churches, and wandered into ceramic stores for a souvenir or two. The São Bento Train Station was another highlight. It’s not just a station; it’s an art gallery with tile murals that tell a story.
Fun fact: While strolling through the university area, we stumbled upon Queima das Fitas, a quirky graduation celebration where students were out in full force. Think Hogwarts vibes, but make it Portuguese.
Skipping the Tourist Traps
Not everything in Porto is worth the hype. Case in point: the TikTok-famous library that allegedly inspired Harry Potter. We passed by, saw the endless line, and immediately noped out. No regrets. Same goes for the river cruise tours—cute idea, but the view gets redundant fast. Sometimes, less is more.
The Vincci Hotel Breakfast Moment
On our last day, we treated ourselves to breakfast at the Vincci Hotel because, why not? The high-end buffet and chic property gave us a taste of luxury without breaking the bank. The view? Chef’s kiss. If you’re craving a little upscale moment in Porto, this is it.
Final Thoughts: Is Porto Worth It?
Yes. Porto is gorgeous, walkable (prepare for hills), and packed with charm. You can cover the highlights in 2-3 days, which makes it a perfect addition to any Portugal itinerary. Sure, it can feel a bit touristy, but overall, it’s got that magical vibe you’ll want to relive.
