My boyfriend had been talking about Venissa Osteria for the longest time.
One of those places that lives in conversations, saved pins, and “we should go there one day” promises. So he finally did it properly and organized a little escape during the Christmas holidays, with one very clear intention: ending the year in the best way possible.
Spoiler: he succeeded.
Getting There Is Already Part Of The Experience
Venissa Osteria is located on Mazzorbo island, which means getting there requires commitment. From our home near Rialto, it’s almost one full hour of boats, waiting, and transitions. This is not a casual “let’s pop out for dinner” situation.
But honestly? That’s part of the charm.
The moment you leave the center of Venice, everything changes. The noise fades. The water opens up. The lagoon becomes wide and quiet again, and by the time you arrive, your nervous system has already slowed down whether you like it or not.
Mazzorbo: Quiet, Green, And Intentionally Boring (In A Good Way)
Let’s be honest: Mazzorbo doesn’t have much to do. And that’s exactly the point.
It’s green, calm, and unapologetically slow. No crowds, no rush, no distractions. Just gardens, vineyards, water, and silence. It feels like Venice before Venice, when life revolved around seasons, tides, and whatever the land and lagoon decided to give that day.
Venissa fits into this rhythm perfectly.
The Osteria: Contemporary, Without Trying Too Hard
Venissa Osteria is contemporary in the best way, thoughtful, grounded, and deeply connected to its surroundings. The menu changes daily, based on market availability, the catch of the day, and what’s growing in the garden.
Nothing is frozen, nothing is pre-cooked, and nothing feels forced. The tasting menu is served to the entire table, which immediately sets the tone: this is about sharing, not control.
We went for the four-course tasting menu, with wine pairing, because if you’re going to do it, you might as well do it properly.
Vegetarian, Done Right (Finally)
I had all the vegetarian options, which they accommodated effortlessly and without making it a whole thing. And let me say this: doing vegetarian food without being cliché is not easy.
No sad substitutions. No fried-fried-fried plates drowning in spices to compensate. Instead, dishes that actually enhanced the natural flavor of the ingredients. Clean, balanced, thoughtful. Vegetables treated with the same respect usually reserved for fish or meat.
It felt refined, modern, and very intentional, not like an afterthought.
Meanwhile, my boyfriend happily explored the fish-based dishes, diving into raw fish, anchovies, cuttlefish, and lagoon-inspired plates that were fresh, precise, and beautifully executed.
Food That Knows When To Stop
What I loved most is that nothing tried to be louder than it needed to be.
The food was balanced and well executed. No heavy sauces, no unnecessary theatrics. Just ingredients allowed to speak, with technique quietly doing its job in the background.
You leave the table satisfied, not overwhelmed, which is rare.
Let’s Talk About The Wine (Because Yes)
Every single wine we tried was exceptional.
Refined, refreshing, elegant, and somehow perfect even though it was freezing cold outside. The Venissa Bianco, made from the ancient Dorona grape grown right there on Mazzorbo, deserves a special mention. Drinking it while sitting a few steps away from the vineyards it comes from feels almost surreal.
It’s one of those moments where wine stops being a drink and becomes part of the place.
Is It Worth The Trip?
Absolutely, but with intention.
Venissa is not somewhere you go every week. It’s far, the island is quiet, and once you’re there, the only real plan is to be there. But that’s exactly why it works so well for special occasions.
We would definitely come back, maybe to celebrate something, maybe just to mark time properly.
And honestly? I can see it being even more magical in the hottest months, when Venice feels overwhelming and crowded. An escape from the city, the heat, and the chaos. A place to find some peace, greenery, and quiet.
Final Thoughts
Overall, we were genuinely happy about the entire experience.
Venissa Osteria isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a reset. A reminder that sometimes the best way to end (or start) something is slowly, intentionally, and with a very good glass of wine in hand.
And if you’re willing to take the boat and give it the time it deserves, Venissa gives it all back, generously.
