So, you’re finally coming to Italy. Maybe it’s been on your Pinterest board since 2012, or maybe you got hit with one too many aesthetic TikToks of Positano at sunset. Either way, congrats! Italy is absolutely worth the hype. But before you hop on that plane, let me, a local (and someone who has watched way too many travelers struggle), give you some unsolicited yet life-changing advice to make your trip actually enjoyable.
1. Your Hotel’s Location Matters More Than You Think
I know, that Airbnb deal 45 minutes outside of Florence sounded amazing when you booked it. But fast forward to day three when you’re dragging your exhausted self home after walking 20,000 steps, and suddenly that commute doesn’t feel so cute. Staying central is always worth it: yes, even if it costs a bit more. Being able to step outside and immediately be in the action rather than dealing with a nightmare of buses and Ubers (which, by the way, are basically nonexistent in some cities) is priceless.
2. Pack Like You’re on a Survival Show
Listen, I get it: you want options. But dragging a 30kg (66lb for my American friends) suitcase through Venice’s bridges or Rome’s cobblestones? Nightmare fuel. If you’re city-hopping by train (which, let’s be real, you probably are if you’re hitting Venice, Florence, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast), keep it light. There are no luggage carts at Italian train stations, and unless you’re traveling with an Olympic weightlifter, you’ll be carrying that bag yourself up and down multiple flights of stairs. Pack smart, pack light, and remember: You’ll probably shop here anyway.
3. Italy’s Weather Is Not Playing With You
If you’re coming in summer, I have one word for you: sweat. It’s hot. Really hot.
Think “I can actually feel my soul leaving my body” hot. Pack breathable clothes, a hat, and please, for the love of pizza, sunscreen. But if you’re here in spring or fall, don’t assume it’s warm 24/7; nights can get chilly, so layers are your best friend. And in winter? It’s not Arctic, but it’s not the mild dream you think it is either, so bring a proper coat.
4. Your Feet Will Hate You If You Choose the Wrong Shoes
Rome is big. Venice has bridges. The Amalfi Coast? Stairs for days. You will walk a lot, so if you think those new sandals are a good idea, think again. Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. No one wants to be that tourist hobbling around with blisters on day two.
5. Stop Taking Selfies: Book A Photographer Instead
I promise you, your trip will be so much more memorable if you have stunning, professional photos rather than 500 blurry selfies where you’re half-sweaty and tourists are photobombing you. Most of my clients send me photos of their walls at home covered in the prints we took together in Venice, and honestly? Best souvenir ever. You get to be fully present in the moment while someone else handles the angles and lighting. Book your Venice photoshoot here.
6. Your Itinerary Doesn’t Have to Be a Military Operation
It’s tempting to cram in every major landmark, but at what cost? Museum fatigue is real, and after your third church in a row, they all start blending together. Focus on what you want to see, not just the “must-sees.” Personally, I limit the number of museums I visit on any given trip because I’d rather enjoy a place than rush through it.
7. Eat Like You Actually Care About Yourself
Ordering McDonald’s delivery in Italy should be illegal. I’m not saying you have to dine at Michelin-star restaurants every night, but at least put in some effort. Italy is home to fresh, high-quality food…lean into it. And pleaseeeeeeeeee, please stay hydrated. The last thing you want is to wake up on checkout day regretting last night’s meal choices (if you know, you know!!!).
8. You Don’t Have to Plan It All Alone
If planning this trip is making you spiral, outsource it! I have an American planner friend who has been all over the world (and Italy, especially), and she can help you put together a seamless, stress-free itinerary. Because let’s be honest, sometimes, having a pro handle the logistics is the real vacation. Feel free to reach out if you’d like her contact!! Happy to help.
9. TikTok Lied To You
I cannot stress this enough: If you’ve seen it on TikTok as a “hidden gem,” it’s not hidden anymore. I’ve lost count of how many times I showed up to some hyped-up spot, only to find a massive line of tourists who also thought they discovered a secret. And when I see TikTok travel recs about Venice? The secondhand embarrassment is real. Take social media recs with a grain of salt and leave some room for spontaneity: you’ll have a much better experience.
10. Consider Smaller Towns Too
Yes, the major cities are great, but some of the best Italian experiences happen in smaller towns nearby. The beauty of Europe is that a short and affordable train ride can take you to some absolutely stunning places that feel way more authentic and way less crowded. Trust me, it’s worth venturing beyond the usual tourist trail.
Final Thoughts: Enjoy It Your Way
Italy is one of those places that will steal your heart if you let it. But trying to see everything, do everything, and document everything will only leave you exhausted. Give yourself time to be in the moment, sip that spritz a little longer, and take in the chaos, beauty, and charm that is Italy. And if you need someone to capture it all for you? You know where to find me.
